Can White Bean Extract Help?

You have probably seen the advertisements on television.  For several years now, starch blockers have been offered as a possibility to assist in weight loss.  Doesn’t that idea sound great?  To think, you could just take a pill once or twice daily and eat all the starchy foods you love.  Fresh steamy homemade bread, buttery potatoes and other starchy vegetables, as well pasta with cheesy sauce and hot tortillas are foods that we have had to limit in the past in order to lose weight are no longer off limits.  Just by taking a simple starch blocker, we could once again enjoy these wonderful foods.  One such starch blockers is derived from white kidney beans.  It is very simply called White Bean Extract.  In 2007, two different studies were conducted both that concluded that white bean extract might be a highly effective tool to block the absorption of carbohydrates in the human digestive system and thus prevent weight gain.

What is white bean extract and how does it work?

White bean extract is available in a tablet formula.  It is claimed to block the digestive enzyme alpha Amalase.  This enzyme is a necessity for the digestive tract to break down the long chain starch Amylose.  This long chain starch is found in such carbohydrate rich foods as lentils, rice and kidney beans.  Amylose is a complex carbohydrate found in grains and vegetables.  This long chain carbohydrate the accounts for 23% of potatoes and 35% of peas.  Typically, cereals are 20 to 30 percent amylose.  Both wheat and oats are 25% amylose.

In the human digestive tract, Alpha Amylase is a necessary enzyme used to convert amylose into glucose.  Think of taking a long paper chain and cutting it into short paper chains with scissors.  The longer chains are too large to be absorbed through the small intestine.  The shorter chains, in the form of glucose, can be absorbed.  The whole theory behind the white bean extract is that it blocks the alpha Amylase from breaking down the long chains and that the undigested carbohydrates simply pass through the digestive system.  The undigested carbohydrates would be treated just as fiber or cellulose by the human body and are eliminated through the bowels.

White bean extract was used in a study by Italy in 2007 that showed a significant weight loss while on a 2000 to 2200 calorie high carbohydrate diet of the 30 subjects who took the white bean extract as compared to 30 subjects on a similar diet who did not take the extract.  The subjects in this study were from 11 to 33 pounds overweight.  It should also be noted that although these diets were high in carbohydrates, they were relatively low in fats.  Consumption of cheese and eggs was limited to two times per week.  Lean ham, beef or pork was allowed for dinner.  Lunch consisted of pasta, beans or pizza.

In a similar study at UCLA, significant weight loss was shown for using White Bean Extract and remaining on a high carbohydrate diet.  This study showed that by adding two 1-gram supplements of White Bean Extract two times daily, subjects lost over 8 ½ pounds as compared to those who took a placebo and lost less than two pounds on the average.

Truly, white bean extract is not the miracle pill that was described in the first paragraph of this article.  Even while taking white bean extract, those trying to lose weight must continue to limit the amount of starchy foods that they eat.  The bean extract does cause some gastric disturbances in some people.  One of these studies required the participants to not begin any type of sports or exercise activities while on the study.  It is likely that the results of these studies would have been even greater if the participants had been involved in a regular aerobic and strength training exercise program. The goal is to improve health.  For example, one might lose a large amount of weight by having an ongoing bout with the stomach flu.  When that bout is over you will have lost weight but there is almost a guarantee that you will not be healthier at the end of the illness. There is no miracle pill cause everyone to lose weight without effort.  White bean extract may be useful in your attempt to lose weight but you will want to weight all your options.  If white bean extract does fit into your plan great.  If it does not, then find a plan that will work for you and stick to it.

I've been taking the pills for couple of months and I can say it has assist in helping me to maintain my weight while still eating the carbs. the phase II brand I'm using says to take 30 mins before meal and when doing so I find that I'm not eating much
By: Julie2011-12-06 04:49:42
I use Phase II but ONLY maybe twice a month, when I want to indulge in pizza!! As Dr. Oz said, use with caution and do not depend on white beat extract as an excuse to eat badly every day but use it sparingly when you want to 'indulge' a bit!!! I love it !!!! Just use some common sense people.

Thanks for your input, think I'll try it along with CLA.

They have this at WalMart, it's called Carb Intercept. Mostly all that's in it is white kidney bean extract. There is so much extract in each tablet that you could not possibly eat (or wouldn't want to eat) enough white kidney beans to get the same strength.

As a new vegan, I eat more potato dishes than I used to. I've dropped considerable weight just by going vegan, but still need to go down another 20 lbs; hence, the white kidney bean extract. Been taking it with carb-heavy meals for about one month. Lately I've been getting abdominal cramps. Took awhile, but eventually I noticed cramps occur on days I've taken the bean extract. I won't be taking it anymore.

I think some of you need to learn how to listen to Dr. Oz and if you don't understand how he meens what he is telling you(for free) go to your own doctor and ask them-then compair Dr.Oz info with your doctors and how much each doctor cost you-you got to remember Dr.Oz only has an hour to tell you all this that he covers on each show(for free)remember that-and not every thing works for everybody just put down the chips and ice cream

Why not eating the White Beans insteade of taking the bills. Am just wondering yoh
By: Jakie2011-10-20 12:55:30
why not eating direct white beans instead of taking the bills.
By: Keegan2011-10-19 10:28:27
Research shows that if you consume 1/2 c. of black beans immediately after eating a heavily carbed meal, it will do the same thing...but, you know beans! High in protein and fiber, but loads of gas! When I do this, I'll take a couple of "gas-X" pills to help counteract the effect of the beans. Pills are so much easier to carry with you when you go out to a restaurant, tho! Still, think about lifestyle changes rather than a "pill to fix it" mentality.

Saw this on Dr.Oz also as it re-aired this week.I want to try it to see if it works also.A little skeptical as I have learned to take the Doc with a grain of salt.In the same show he said to work your triceps by doing tricep curls over and behind your head. This is the worst tricep exercise there is and have been cautioned by extreme body builders to stay away from that exercise as you will set yourself up for injury, neck and spine strain, plus you may drop the weight on your head and that would surely hurt!.....hahaha! by he way a good article.I will save this site to favorites.

Bought @ GNC today. The salesguy asked if I heard about it from Dr. Oz's Show. I admitted yes I did, then asked him if sales had a boost on this product because of the show. He actually said that Dr. Oz is GNC's partner and always promotes their products. I was negatively surprised and now wonder if I'm wasting my time with this. With walking 1 hour a day, 5 days a week, I lose about 4lbs a month. No other changes to diet. With a little more, 1 hour of elliptical, bringing my heart rate higher and drinking more water, almost no other soft drinks, I lose about 8lbs a month. I guess I'll just have to see...?

I don't think Dr. Oz said that you can eat whatever you like. He just said take these pills before your biggest meal of the day and it will help block some of the carbs.
By: Shirley2011-10-02 10:44:18
Good analysis and am going to try it at Dr. Oz's recommendation. Unbiased, you make your own decision.
By: Kathy2011-10-02 07:01:29
Saw this on Dr. Oz...willing to try this but I'm thinking this probably won't work like I'm hoping. Keeping my fingers crossed!

Taking a supplement that allows you to eat food that is not good for you, like too many bad carbs, is just not good. Stick to a low complex carb, low fat, low sugar diet rich in fiber, whole grains, vegetables and some fruit and exercise every day and you will lose all the weight you need to. I have lost 50 pounds in 9 months. No magic,no supplements, just good basic sense.

This is a really fair article. Pros & cons are presented in an open minded way.

hasn't worked for me. the main difference while taking it was extreme discomfort due to bloating and gas. not for me
By: Carolyn2011-08-01 12:54:55
I have gone through approximately 3 bottles of white bean extract. i have been taking 1 gram before each meal. the biggest change i found was extreme discomfort due to gas and bloating. i have stopped taking them for about a week now and have found no difference in my weight consuming the exact same foods. sorry, i didn't see any real results with this product.

I have a very bad heart snd need something to help me lose some weight.
By: Bee2011-05-27 09:05:29
I have been taking white bean extract for about a month now, and, although I've lost about six pounds, it is not a rapid loss. I eat minimal carbs and try to stay on a 1200 +- a day calorie diet. I'm not that impressed with the pill and will probably not stay on it once I have finished the bottle.....sorry....
By: jean2011-05-26 09:42:29
Hope it works!!
