What is BMI?

Calculating your BMI is the easiest way to keep track of your body weight. BMI or Body Mass Index is a number showing the correlation of your weight and height. This enables a person to know if his or her weight is normal or not. There are four ways to describe a person’s weight status, namely Underweight, Normal, Overweight, and Obese.
Body Mass Index, contrary to what others believe, is not a direct body fat indicator. Through intensive research, it is discovered that BMI only has a correlation to other methods that determine body fat. All you need is just the data of your body weight and height then you are ready to use BMI. Once you have the data of your height and weight, it would be easy to determine whether you have a weight problem or not.

BMI is a helpful tool for anyone to identify his or her health status. Knowledge about your own health status could help you avoid future health risks and develop diseases related to being overweight or obese. Dieticians, doctors, nurses and other health care professionals find BMI helpful in giving appropriate treatment to their patients. As they figure out your BMI, they could give you more appropriate and effective advice.

The calculation of a person’s Body Mass Index or BMI is highly recommended by the CDC. This is for the reason that it is not pricey. It can be used with ease by anybody. BMI is considered as one of the most effective technique on assessing the sector that is obese and overweight. The said method promotes easy comparison between information related to the weight status of the whole population.

There are also other ways to determine your body weight status. One of these methods is the measurement of your body’s fat through the measurement of your skin fold thickness. This is done by using calipers.

If a person has a BMI of more than 25. It has been a question whether or not an athlete or an individual who has lots of muscles in the body and with a BMI (Body Mass Index) of over 25 can be considered to be overweight.

Any person with a BMI of more than 25 is grouped in the overweight category while those with BMI of more than 30 are in the obese category.

It is worthy to note however, that BMI does not directly determine the amount of fats in the body of a person and is measured using the weight of the person (including the muscles and fats). Consequently, not all individuals with high BMI have higher percentage of fats in the body. This can be seen in athletes who have developed good muscles. Their high BMI is not due to the high amount of fats but primarily because of the well-developed muscles in their body because of undergoing proper trainings. Hence, it is not correct to say that once a person is overweight (those having a BMI of 25.0 to 29.9) he has more fats in the body. But those who are categorized as obese (those having a BMI of 30 or up) obviously have high amount of body fat.

It should also be born in mind that weight is only one of the possible reasons that influence the chance of getting any illness. Any issue or worry regarding the one’s weight should be addressed to a professional healthcare provider because they have enough knowledge about this.
The ranges of BMI are determined by the relationship between the weight of the person’s body and illness and death. Overweight and obesity have many health disadvantages that are supposed to be avoided. Few of these are:

  4. Coronary heart disease
  5. Stroke

BMI number for children and adults is primarily measured similarly but the standard in reading the same is different. The BMI age- and sex-specific percentiles for children and adults are used in the following grounds:

  1. The amount of fat within the person’s body changes with age
  2. The amount of fat in the body is different between girls and boys.

With the help of CDC BMI-for-age growth charts, health care providers are able to track down these differences and interpret the BMI number into a percentile depending on the sex and age of the child.
How is BMI Calculated and Interpreted?

 BMI or Body Mass Index is also known as the Quetelet Index. It determines whether a person may be categorized as obese or not. Though it does not measure fat directly, still it is considered a good indicator. The process used to calculate the BMI for both adults and children are the same. The person has to measure first his weight and height for these will be used in the formula.

For adults, BMI is calculated by dividing the weight in kilograms by height in meters and squaring it. If the measurements are in centimeters then you need to divide it by 100 in order to get the height in meters.   If the measurements are in pounds, the formula would be weight divided by height squared multiplied by seven hundred three. Thus, if a person weighs one hundred sixty nine pounds and stands at 4’ 11”, then he is categorized as obese because his BMI is above 30.0. This is true with adults over the age of twenty. The basis of BMI or its interpretation varies with children and teen-agers. For adults above twenty, if the Body Mass Index is below 18.5 then that individual is considered underweight while for those with normal weight status, the range of BMI is between 18.5 to 24.9. Overweight people are those with a BMI of 25.0 to 29.9.

Though the link or parallelism between the fat in the body and the BMI number is strong, this is not applicable to everybody. There are slight variations if sex, race, and age have to be factored in the interpretation. It is said that women have more body fat compared with men even if they have the same body mass index. At the same, even if the body mass index is similar, younger people are inclined to have less body fat compared with older people. Since muscles weigh heavier than fats, athletes might have high level of body mass index but is not considered obese. This is due to the muscular framework of the body of the athlete.

A high body mass index might also signal medical conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, etc. To further check that indeed the individual is at risk of contracting a medical condition, which is caused by high BMI, several other factors has to be considered. According to the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, a person has to determine the waist size or circumference. A bigger waist means the higher the probability to have obesity-related illnesses. People with high body mass index are also prone to diseases such as hypertension or having high blood pressure. This condition is even made worse by the person’s lifestyle such as not having enough exercise or physical activities. All these factors have to be determined in the interpretation of the level of body mass index. If all these are present, then the individual has to take precautionary measures because the BMI is also used as a gauge for disorders /diseases, which are related to obesity.
